Dr. Rob Nelson's Bio

Rob Nelson offers over twenty years of experience in marketing, business development, strategy, operations and program management. He has served both as a private consultant and senior manager and executive, leading a dozen different organizations and multiple teams and projects for Fortune 30 and privately held firms including, Quorum Health Resources, GE Healthcare, IBM, Motorola, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and 

Academic Credentials

Rob earned his Doctor of Business Administration Candidate at Grenoble Ecole (GEM) in strategic marketing in March 2016. GEM is a AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA accredited French Grande Ecole and one of only seven triple-accredited Doctoral programs in Business in the world. With a 4 Palm Rating, it is considered a top school of significant international influence. Rob's ground-breaking research is in the field in the "Transformation of Healthcare Organizations through development of higher market orientation". Currently, the faculty of GEM and Dr. Rob Nelson are in pursuit of publishing research results in top tier journals. The Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) at Grenoble Ecole de Management is a research-based degree which is the highest-level business qualification attainable. It is unique in that it is a research driven qualification focused on the intersection of academic research and actual management practice.  It requires conducting, writing and disseminating high quality research of a doctoral standard but also achieving a greater level of effectiveness as a professional practitioner in managing business, innovation and technology under change.  Candidates from this program are recruited from all over the world. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Generally, they are high level professional  business leaders with advanced degrees in business disciplines.

Rob earned his MBA in strategy/marketing at the top ranked Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He also holds a BA in Political Science at the University of Oklahoma which he completed while on scholarship from the US Navy.

Academic Appointments
Rob is Adjunct Professor and Industry Expert at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Stuart School of Business. Stuart is a one-of-a-kind business school in Chicago emphasizing analytics and quantitative methodology, hands-on learning, and real-world problem solving. IIT Stuart School of Business. Rob teaches the capstone strategic marketing in the MBA program, Marketing Analytics and Communications Masters and dual degree programs with students from all over the world. His students are are very involved with the start-up and tech sectors and incubators. His students have conducted nearly 3 dozen marketing projects for participating client companies including GE, Amcor (Medical Packaging Division) and all sectors including medical device, consumer food, energy, retail, online applications and high tech. Dr. Rob Nelson collaborates with the Knapp Entrepreneurship Center and other incubators in the Chicago area to help start-ups solve strategic marketing issues.

Proven Industry Experience

Currently, Rob is marketing leader for GE Healthcare IT Centricity Services business with responsibility for growth with a focus on analytics and consulting.  Prior, as Vice President, Strategic Resources Rob led the strategy practice at Quorum Health Resources (QHR), a wholly-owned subsidiary of a Fortune 200 healthcare system, Community Health System (CHS) Rob’s team delivered strategy, marketing consulting engagements for hospitals nationwide. QHR is one of the top 5 healthcare management consulting firms.

Before QHR, Rob led global solution for the Strategy, Leadership and Performance Transformation Practice of GE Healthcare's advisory business - Performance Solutions (now GE Healthcare Camden Partners).

Prior, he was Senior Vice President, Marketing & Strategic Business Development and Managing Director, Global Operations for the American Health Information Management Assn. (AHIMA) where he served as a member of the senior leadership team with responsibilities for  marketing, strategy, product management/marketing, business development, sales, membership development, market research and customer service as well as AHIMA’s international operations including the Global Services Office in Brussels.

Rob also served as the Executive Director of the education and research affiliate of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the pre-eminent entity certifying physicians in the United States. Rob also served at the ABMS as head of business development of the ABMS where he led a doubling in growth of business line revenues developing the commercial enterprise data and services business and launching new data and online products. ​As a consultant, Mr. Nelson has advised clients on marketing, strategy, development, funding and general operations and management issues. His clients have included a mix of publicly held, privately held and non-for-profit firms. 

Previously Rob found and led his own practice as Founder and Managing Director Axion Business Solutions which became a family business together with his Father Dr. Stephen G. Nelson, working also in the sciences which included projects for NASA as well as winning SBIR grants for clients in collaboration with the University of Arizona and the University of Hawaii.

​Prior to consulting, Rob served in senior management roles in Market Initiatives, Program Management,Global E-Business Operations Effectiveness as well as founding member of a Corporate Diversity Business Council and Chair of National Marketing at Motorola. Rob has also served in operations roles with IBM, where he ran production control/total supply chain operations for the Endicott site in the Microelectronics divison, as well as other positions with Motorola, and a privately held electronics manufacturer based in Seattle. 

Rob earned the association executive (CAE through 2015) and is also currently board certified healthcare executive and fellow (FACHE) and he is a Certified in Product Management (Pragmatic Marketing). He is also trained in Miller Heiman Strategic Selling and Conceptual Selling and is a member of the following professional organizations:
